A 2019 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Legacy Award winner, Washington is a communications practitioner in all forms of media for over four decades. He has served on numerous boards in Dallas Texas and nationally. currently serves on the board of the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
In 1989, Jim acquired The Dallas Weekly, the largest and most widely read African-American news weekly in North Texas, where he currently serves as Co-Publisher. He is also the President and General Manager of The Atlanta Voice newspaper since 2003. He is married to Janis Ware, Publisher of The Atlanta Voice and has two children, Patrick and Elena by a previous marriage and three grandchildren. He authored his first book, Spiritually Speaking, Reflections For and From a New Christian (2019). Washington is spearheading the digital transformation of the Atlanta Voice and is bringing that same dynamic to the Dallas Weekly, where his son Patrick is now the CEO and Publisher.
He holds a Masters Degree in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a proud graduate of Southern University, having graduated with a degree in English and Instructional Media.
